Slipknot, the pioneers of new wave metal!

Posted by aN dubz on 25th Jun 2010

1999 was a very important year for metal, Corey Taylor joined Slipknot and was followed by the release of their outstanding self titled debut album. From the moment the nine masked men burst into our faces they have gathered a massive loyal fan base and made consistently excellent music. They are such an exciting band who I don’t think I will ever tire of. For me, the impact after listening to ‘Slipknot’ will never be beaten.

I must admit, initially I was dubious about the group’s gimmicky yet grotesque masks. I think after about a minute and a half of Wait and Bleed I knew they had the required substance to pull of such garish attire! It was my favourite song of 2000 and would definite qualify for a place in my top 10 singles of the decade (yes, I love to compile a top 10 at any given opportunity). Slipknot were just what the metal scene needed and have since been hailed as pioneers of the new wave of American heavy metal. One of their strengths is their universal appeal to metal fans of all ages. There aren't many current acts who also gain the approval of the more senior members of the metal community!

Slipknot have been on our minds recently with the death of their bassist, Paul Gray. It has recently been announced that the death was caused by an accidental overdose. Our heart goes out to the group. Corey Taylor gave a highly emotional tribute to Paul. He performed ‘Bother’ with Stone Sour for the first time on their tour. Everyone at the Grindstore tent had a tear in their eye. This tragic event has come after the death of many other talented musicians this year.

It would be great to hear your Slipknot related thoughts.
Slipknot are Grindstore’s band of the week so all of their music merchandise will be reduced by 10%. Enjoy!

"Slipknot were, and still are amazing. I think it'd be awesome if they did a tribute song for Paul Gray. Every fan, and band member, will miss him greatly."

"Picture it! A Whitesnake gig. Wembley Arena. In the 80's. I loved Whitesnake, but the whole pretty boy hair-rock thing was just too... bouncy and blow-dried for me. I missed the aggressiveness and attitude of 70’s punk and the self-piercings I inflicted upon myself, and the subsequent trips to the doctor with my mum, to remove the offending safety pins. I had to wait quite a while to find that again, and then it came, by way of a very strange moment at the V festival in Hylands Park (not sure what year). It was raining with vengeance, the mud was a crusty pain in the arse, and to make life even more miserable, I just endured some mellow poop singing about love as they acoustically strummed it out on one of the smaller stages. Big yawn on the horizon I think. But then it happened! In between the bands setting up, 'Wait & Bleed' came blurting out of the speakers................ Now hold the fuck up. This was about to get interesting. I moshed with a couple of likeminded dweebs. The yellow mellow gang run for cover as we kicked mud into the faces of the uneducated, and the rest as they say is just a proud fist to the chest of history (do they say that?). Paul Gray, we miss you man, but the show will go on - No. 2 would have wanted it that way. Slipknot rock! Now do excuse me, I’m off to hunt me a Jedward. \m/"
