The Clash formed amidst the original Punk Rock movement in Britain.
Original line up consisted of Joe Strummer (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Mick Jones (lead guitar, vocals), Paul Simenon (bass, backing vocals, occasional lead vocals) and Nicky "Topper" Headon (drums, percussion). Headon left in 1982 and Joey in 1983 and the band continued with new members until 1986, when they finally disbanded.
“White Riot” (1977), the Clash’s debut, reached number 38 in the UK Singles Chart. This was followed by The Clash, their first album, which peaked at number 12 in the UK. “Give 'Em Enough Rope” was released the following year and fared well in the UK, peaking at number 2.
The band’s third album, “London Calling” (1979), sold approximately two million copies and was certified gold in December 1979. It reached number nine in the UK and spawned the band’s biggest hit “London Calling”.
“Combat Rock”, the band’s fifth and most successful album, was released in 1982. It entered at number 2, spent 23 weeks in the UK Chart and spent 61 weeks in the US chart peaking at number 7. “Combat Rock” featured the band’s biggest US hit “Rock the Casbah” reaching at number 8.
The Clash’s final album, “Cut the Crap”, was released in 1985 made it to number 16 in the UK Album Chart. Any hopes of a reunion with all of the Clash members was ended when Strummer died from a congenitial heart defect on 22nd December 2002.
