Red Hot Chili Peppers formed in 1983 and have since sold more than fifty-three million albums worldwide. For the majority of the band’s career members have been vocalist Anthony Kiedis, guitarist John Frusciante, bassist Michael "Flea" Balzary, and drummer Chad Smith. Debut album, “The Red Hot Chili Peppers” was released August 10, 1984 and has sold around 300,000 copies worldwide (as of 2007). Their fifth album, “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” (1991) launched the band into the mainstream. It has sold over 13 million copies and peaked at number 3 in the US. The album produced the hit singles "Under the Bridge," "Give It Away," "Suck My Kiss" and "Breaking the Girl.". The follow up, “One Hot Minute”, reached number 4 on the Billboard Top 200. The release of “Californication” (1999) brought worldwide success for the band. It went on to sell 15 million copies and featured hit singles "Otherside", "Californication" and the Grammy Award-winning "Scar Tissue". Their eighth studio album, “By the Way” (2002), confirmed the Red Hot Chilli Pepper’s position as one of the biggest rock bands in the world. It topped the charts in six countries including the UK and New Zealand and sold over 280,000 copies in the first week. “Stadium Arcadium” was released in May 2006 and in the first week sold 442,000 copies in the US, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200. The band have ended their hiatus and have also lost Frusciante again but will be headlining Rock in Rio in 2011 to coincide with the twentieth anniversary of Blood Sugar Sex Magik.
