Pantera formed in 1981 by brothers Vinnie Paul Abbot (drums) and "Dimebag" Darrell (guitar) Abbot. The brothers were joined in 1982 by Bassist Rex Brown and by Phil Anselmo as lead vocalist, in 1987. “Metal Magic”, their debut album, was released in 1983. Nine years later the band entered the mainstream with their major label debut, “Cowboys from Hell” (1990). “Vulgar Display of Power” (1992), their follow up, reached number 44 in the Billboard 200 albums chart and has since achieved Double Platinum status. The band’s seventh album, “Far Beyond Driven”, was released in March 1994 and debuted at number one in the US and Australia. It featured the single “I’m Broken” which received the band’s first Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance in 1996. “The Great Southern Trendkill” (1996) saw further commercial success and made it to number 4 in the Billboard 200. “Reinventing the Steel”, which was released on March 2000, debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200. Three singles were released from the album, "Revolution Is My Name", “I'll Cast a Shadow” and "Goddamn Electric". In 2003 Pantera officially disbanded and fan’s hopes of a reunion were lost when "Dimebag" Darrell was shot and killed on-stage in 2004 whilst performing with his new band Damageplan. Anselmo and Rex Brown teamed up with members of the band Corrosion of Conformity to form the band Down.
