Green Day spawned out of the Californian underground punk scene. Billie Joe Armstrong (guitar, vocals) and Mike Dirnt (bass) formed the group in 1987 and Tre Cool joined after the release of their first album “1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours” (1991). “Kerplunk”, their second full length album, was released in 1992. It has sold around 4 million copies worldwide. The album generated a lot of underground interest which led to the group signing with major record label Reprise. “Dookie” (1994), the bands major label debut, is the band’s best selling album. "Longview", "Welcome to Paradise", "Basket Case", "She" and "When I Come Around" were all hit singles for the band. The album has gone on to sell over 12 million copies worldwide making it Green Day’s only diamond album. “Dookie” also won the 1994 Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance. Green Day released “Insomniac” in 1995, signalling a move away from the poppier “Dookie”. It sold two million copies in the US. The band’s fifth album, “Nimrod” (1997) entered the U.S charts at number ten. It included the hit ballad “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” which reached number 11 in the UK charts. Three years later the much anticipated “Warning” was released. Around one million copies of the album have been sold worldwide. 2004’s “American Idiot” propelled Green Day back to the forefront of Rock music. The seventh studio album reached number one in 19 countries and sold 267,000 copies in its first week. The band then completed their longest tour to date. Their two dates at the Milton Keynes bowl were filmed for “Bullet in a Bible”, a live DVD. Their most recent album “21st Century Breakdown” was released in 2009 and reached number one in fourteen different countries. Green Day are currently working on their ninth studio album.
